The Cambridge Inter-faith Programme needs a pianist and a cellist for an event on the evening of 20th July.

A new piece has been written by the Israeli composer Oded Zehavi for a conference we are holding that week at Madingley Hall. This will be the first public performance of the piece, to an audience of about 90 people.

The piece is called Psalm 42 for Piano and Cello, and we will be receiving the sheet music in the next day or two. The piece is quite short: no more than a few minutes long. We can offer the pianist and the cellist an honorarium of £250 each, an invitation to the dinner at Madingley Hall that evening (along with the composer), and our undying gratitude!

Please contact Mike Higton on mah18@cam.ac.uk, (7)63015 (office), 07879 116896 (mobile).

MUSICAL DIRECTOR

We are delighted to be opening applications for one of the darkest and grandest Gilbert and Sullivan’s, Yeomen of the Guard. Perhaps one of the most engaging and exciting works, it is much loved for both its fascinating music and witty lyrics. This work is one of the finest and most operatic scores Sullivan wrote featuring magnificent choruses, spritely patter songs, spectacular arias, and possibly one of the most exquisite duets of all, "I have a song to sing, O!"

The show, set in the Tower of London in the reign of Henry VIII, tells the story of Colonel Fairfax, under the sentence of death upon false charges, wanting to marry before he is executed, so that his cousins who pressed these charges would not inherit his estate. Jack Point, a travelling player, agrees to allow his fiancée, Elsie Maynard, to be Fairfax’s wife, allowing Elsie to be a very wealthy widow within hours. However, Fairfax’s friends spring him from the Tower, leaving Fairfax alive with Elsie being more married than she was expecting, and Jack’s future wife being married to someone else! Jack tries all contrivances to win back Elsie, but will all his endeavours be in vain?

Further information about the play can be found at http://math.boisestate.edu/gas/yeomen/html/index.html.

To apply, please email Frank DiTraglia <fditraglia@gmail.com> by midnight Sunday 14th November, with including a brief description of relevant experience. Applicants may be invited to an interview at their convenience.

There is no piano (if this changes we will advise ASAP)

There is no amplification

We do not require vocals.

We are anticipating they will start toward the latter part of the evening
(when the main part of the meal concludes) and stay until the end,
swing/jazz ( not of the Acker Bilk variety) with the aim of creating a
coffee club atmosphere.

They will of course be paid.

If you can offer any help, it would be much appreciated. I can be readily
contacted by email:

I need instrumentalists for an education concert based around science and music. Performance is 10.30-11.30am on March 16th with a brief rehearsal on March 15th. Very easy music so all standards welcome. There's lots of activities for the primary schools to join in with, fun pieces of music and should be a lot of fun!

Please let me know if you can be involved. Thank you. Ruth.

CUMS II is the music society's second orchestra, and performs at a high level with some of Cambridge's best student conductors. As the leader for CUMS II has unfortunately had to resign, we are now looking for a new leader for Lent term. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings, with the concert on the 10th of March. The programme for this term is:

Ravel Pavane pour une infante défunte
Martinu Viola Concerto
Tchaikovsky Symphony no. 2

This would be a great opportunity for a violinist who'd like some experience in leading with a friendly and relaxed orchestra. If you're interested please email Emma Smith (evs25) by January 25th.

WANTED!! Accompanist for Cambridgeshire Village Choir

The Orwell Singers is a mixed choir with no audition and its members come from a fairly wide catchment area between Cambridge and Royston. (Orwell is just off the A603 near Wimpole Hall).

The choir has been in existence for nearly 20 years and performs a wide repertoire of mainly light, secular music for enjoyment and performance, with concerts in July and December. Our next concert is on July 4th so it has an American theme, with works ranging from Aaron Copeland to Elvis Presley!

We are looking for a person who would be able to rehearse with us on Monday evenings during school term times and to play for our concerts. They would need to enjoy all kinds of music and ideally be willing to take sectional rehearsals to help our conductor, Sally Beavis. We need to find someone as soon as possible!

We would be very happy for anyone who might be interested to come along on a Monday evening to meet us. For further details please contact Katie Reid on 01223 207387 or mail to: katie.reid@talk21.com
