This will be a student run group comprising of about 30 players. Initial repertoire is Grieg Holberg Suite and Bartok Romanian dances. One of the greatest Broadway shows of all time, ‘Gypsy’ follows the story of Mme Rose, the epitome of a pushy stage mother, and her two daughters. Rose is determined to make her children stars at any cost, constantly dreaming up new acts for her ‘babies’ while failing to recognise that they are growing into young women. After several failed attempts to make the act a success in Vaudeville, Roses’ dreams coming crashing down around her as one daughter elopes, the other becomes a burlesque star and the man she loves leaves her. Jule Styne’s fantastic musical score includes poignant ballads, up-tempo Vaudeville songs and sleazy burlesque ‘stripping music’, as well as a duet with a pantomime cow! We are looking for a pit band of around 15 players, including most common band instruments. We are currently most in need of STRINGS and TRUMPETS/TROMBONES. The competition winners will lead the orchestra through next year's hugely exciting programme, which includes Beethoven's 9th Symphony, orchestral concerts with guest conductors Martin Andre and Peter Stark, a performance with a group of the University's leading chapel choirs conducted by Christopher Robinson, and the world premiere of a major new work commissioned from Sir Peter Maxwell Davies to celebrate Cambridge's 800th anniversary. I am the conductor and joint MD for the ADC's production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' later this term. The show will be Shakespeare's iconic tale of fairies, comedy, lovers and magic with ballet and set to an original score. We're now looking to form the orchestra. We are looking for violins, violas, cellos, double bass, and percussion. Will you join us? The dates and times of the performances are: Tuesday February 20th - Saturday February 24th 7.45 pm. Saturday February 24th, 2.30 pm. Rehearsals: Orchestral rehearsals: SUNDAY 11TH FEBRUARY 1-3 SATURDAY 17TH FEBRUARY 1-3 SUNDAY 18TH FEBRUARY 11-1 Technical rehearsal (to coordinate the music and onstage action): Monday February 19th either the afternoon or the evening. Dress rehearsal: Tuesday February 20th, afternoon. Since the score and the choreography are both original we have been able to completely control the production as an artistic whole. The show has and absolutely all-star cast, fantastic producers, set and light designers, some of the best techies in the university, brilliant choreographers, one of whom used to dance ballet professionally, and a director whose production of Kafka's 'The Trial' received critical acclaim and made a profit at the Edinburgh fringe this summer.
