Hey everyone, My name is Alex and alongside several other music lovers I'm
forming a group to be known as the Cambridge University Show Choir (aka The
Medleys). Yes, that means singing and dancing! We are looking to form a
group of around 10 men and 10 women to beginning a weekly rehearsal
schedule as of Lent Term (January 2011).

--- Repertoire --- We will be singing, quite broadly: Broadway, Disney,
Glee, ABBA, musical theatre, film & TV music, Eurovision, madrigals, and
other contemporary music and mash-ups. If you audition now you can have a
say in what we choose to sing at our inaugural meeting on the evening of
Thursday November 25.

--- Auditions --- Auditions are happening this Saturday and Sunday,
November 20-21, in St John's College. If neither of these days suits, you
may schedule an audition by appointment to take place any time that is
available from now until Wednesday November 24. You will be asked to sing
an unaccompanied work entirely of your choice: whatever you think best
displays your skill as a vocalist, although something that fits into our
repertoire would be even better! You will also be tested on range,
sightreading and aural skills.

--- Commitment --- We will be meeting once a week, at a time to be decided
but most likely on a Thursday evening, for 2 hours. Extra rehearsals will
be scheduled as necessary. We aim to put on one concert per term as well as
perform on request for other functions.

I hope you like the sound of the group, don't hesitate to contact me (ap665
or 07909049574) if you have any questions or to set up your audition.

Thanks so much,
Alex.

West Side Story, many would claim the greatest musical ever written, has delighted audiences worldwide since its opening on Broadway more than 50 years ago.
DIRECTOR

MUSICAL DIRECTOR

We are delighted to be opening applications for one of the darkest and grandest Gilbert and Sullivan’s, Yeomen of the Guard. Perhaps one of the most engaging and exciting works, it is much loved for both its fascinating music and witty lyrics. This work is one of the finest and most operatic scores Sullivan wrote featuring magnificent choruses, spritely patter songs, spectacular arias, and possibly one of the most exquisite duets of all, "I have a song to sing, O!"

The show, set in the Tower of London in the reign of Henry VIII, tells the story of Colonel Fairfax, under the sentence of death upon false charges, wanting to marry before he is executed, so that his cousins who pressed these charges would not inherit his estate. Jack Point, a travelling player, agrees to allow his fiancée, Elsie Maynard, to be Fairfax’s wife, allowing Elsie to be a very wealthy widow within hours. However, Fairfax’s friends spring him from the Tower, leaving Fairfax alive with Elsie being more married than she was expecting, and Jack’s future wife being married to someone else! Jack tries all contrivances to win back Elsie, but will all his endeavours be in vain?

Further information about the play can be found at http://math.boisestate.edu/gas/yeomen/html/index.html.

TWO SOPRANOS REQUIRED

‘These Things Happen’, a brand new comic musical-operetta hybrid about romantic affliction, is pleased to open applications for two sopranos to complete an excellent cast of eight singers.

The show, set in a bar, depicts eight friends, each of whom takes their turn to present a ten minute chamber operetta about how love has driven them to alcohol, dealing with situations as diverse as commitmentphobia, two-timing, unrequited love, bedroom boredom and relationships counselling –always in the most absurd and stylized way possible. It is scored for eight solo singers and large orchestra, and arranged so that those not storytelling at any time double up as the other characters involved in the tale.

Performances will take place late on the evening of Thursday 10th of June and during the afternoon of Monday 14th of June, and are set to be amongst the real highlights of post-exam entertainment. With the exception of preliminary note-bashing, the rehearsal schedule will be arranged so that no cast member is involved before their exams are finished.

We are looking for:

A soprano able to play both an aristocratic lady in search of a spicier love-life AND a beautiful girl who runs a jewellery shop. This would suit a singer with an operatic or lied-ish voice.

A soprano able to play a girl of loose morals who is two-timing her long term boyfriend while he works away. For this, we require a singer with a musical theatre voice and musical theatre experience.

To arrange a brief, informal audition at your convenience – or if you wish to ask anything more about this brand new work – please email Jonathan Pease (jep47) as soon as possible.

‘Gypsy’ – Magdalene Musical Productions Society, Lent term week 7, 3rd-6th March, Magdalene College Cripps Auditorium.

One of the greatest Broadway shows of all time, ‘Gypsy’ follows the story of Mme Rose, the epitome of a pushy stage mother, and her two daughters. Rose is determined to make her children stars at any cost, constantly dreaming up new acts for her ‘babies’ while failing to recognise that they are growing into young women. After several failed attempts to make the act a success in Vaudeville, Roses’ dreams coming crashing down around her as one daughter elopes, the other becomes a burlesque star and the man she loves leaves her. Jule Styne’s fantastic musical score includes poignant ballads, up-tempo Vaudeville songs and sleazy burlesque ‘stripping music’, as well as a duet with a pantomime cow!

We are looking for a pit band of around 15 players, including most common band instruments. We are currently most in need of STRINGS and TRUMPETS/TROMBONES.
If you are interested in playing in the band, please E-mail the MD, Chris Nash, at cn320 as soon as possible, giving details of the instrument(s) played, approximate standard and any previous band/orchestral experience.

FITZTHEATRE NEEDS MUSICIANS!

If you are interested in playing the Guitar, Violin, Bassoon, Tenor Saxophone or Baritone Saxophone in Fitztheatre's production of Cy Coleman's Sweet Charity, please contact the Musical Director, Bella Gage, on iag25. The music is challenging, but a lot of fun to play, and it's a truly delightful show. Rehearsals are going really well, and it promises to be a super spectacle! You may well recognise some of the songs in it,
without realising that 'Sweet Charity' is where they originated - 'Big Spender', 'The Rhythm of Life', and 'If my Friends Could See Me Now' to name but a few. If you would like to play, or would like any more information, please email me as soon as possible.

The rehearsal commitments would be as follows, although this is negotiable:

Saturday 23rd February 11am-3pm

Sunday 24th February 11am-3pm - Sitzprobe (first proper run-through with band and singers together)

Monday 25th February - Tech rehearsal - time to be announced, but probably from 7pm

Tuesday 26th - 7pm onwards - dress rehearsal

Thursday 28th - performance 8pm

Friday 29th - performance 8pm

Saturday 1st March - two performances, one 5.30pm, one 8.30pm.

The music is a bit challenging, but a lot of fun to play, and it's a truly delightful show. of weeks, is still seeking a cellist to complete its already lively and
talented orchestra. The project has been tremendous fun so far, and
promises not to dissapoint as the performances approach. The rehearsal
schedule is fairly minimal and those with other commitments should not be
put off as there is a degree of flexibility around rehearsals, and
potentially with performances if absolutely necessary. The run itself will
be from Tues 26th Feb - Sat 1st March, with each performance beginning at
8pm.

If interested, please contact the Musical Director, Ed Bell, on
ejb69@cam.ac.uk, who would also be happy to pass on further details about
the rehearsals and run if necessary.

Alice: A Fresher's Tale

26th February-1st March 2008

Selwyn College

Boasting a talking cat, tiddlywinks champion, rebellious fellows and unpersuasive heathens this hilarious tale follows Alice, our fresh-faced heroine as she encounters the strange and mysterious Cantabrigian world. Foremost a Fresher's tale of formals and fellows, Facebook and fire-alarms, we explore Alice's hopes, insecurities and potato-hurling habits in some mind-blowing musical numbers. Jim and Kate - her squabbling college parents, the dictatorial master, an elusive porter and the Bishop himself all impact upon whether Alice will ever truly fit in. Brought to you by 'The Mighty Players', who had recent success with 'The Zoo Story' at the ADC theatre, we aim to bring the real life and soul of Cambridge to the stage in an all singing all dancing form. This is not just a musical. This is Selwyn The Musical.
