Cambridge University Opera Society Present
DIE FLEDERMAUS
by Johann Strauss II

Seeks:
ASSISTANT MUSICAL DIRECTOR/PRINCIPAL RÉPÉTITEUR

Prince Orlofsky is throwing a party, and Falke has orchestrated some real-life drama for the
Prince’s entertainment. All in revenge for the time his best friend Eisenstein left him in the
middle of town, passed out and dressed as a bat...

Everyone who’s anyone is going to be there. They just don’t want each other to know.
Eisenstein should be in prison so he’s keeping a low profile, especially as police-chief Frank
is also there in disguise. Eistenstein’s wife, having left her former lover locked up in her
husband’s prison cell, is also keen to conceal her identity. Their maid Adele should be
tending to her sick aunt, not partying with her sister. With the help of a bit of waltzing and
copious amounts of champagne, everyone’s identities will be exposed, and their
philandering revealed.

Cambridge University Opera Society’s production places this much-loved farce in the
privileged world of twenty-first century young socialites. Bubbling with infectious energy
and fizzing with melodious charm, Strauss’s Die Fledermaus will leave you as giggly as those
onstage (champagne optional).
------------------
Ideally we are looking for someone who can fill the role of both Assistant Musical Director and Principal Répétiteur, however the positions may well be filled by two different people.
In an AMD we are looking for someone with experience in singing or vocal direction. The job of the AMD would be to assist the Musical Director in rehearsals and in leading extra principal and chorus rehearsals. The time commitment of an AMD would not necessarily be great, but would be a fantastic experience for someone looking for an avenue into conducting.
We are looking for a highly competent pianist (and good sight reader) for the core role of Principal Répétiteur. This is a crucially important position within the production and would involve participation at most rehearsals accompanying both principals and chorus.
To apply, please email ab836@cam.ac.uk by 11pm on Tuesday 25th October.

CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY OPERA SOCIETY announces auditions for its ANNUAL MAY WEEk OPERA production, to be performed on 13 and 14 JUNE, 2008

This year's May Week opera is an exciting production of SAVITRI by Gustav Holst in the Round Church, to be staged alongside the same composer's HYMNS FROM THE RIG VEDA (3rd Group).

The libretto of this opera is taken from the great Indian epic: the Mahabharata. In this moving story that takes place in the forest, Savitri, wife of Satyavan, hears the voice of Death calling to her announcing the imminent death of her husband. Not long after, Satyavan does indeed fall dead, and Death takes it upon himself to visit Savitri. Moved by her greeting, Death will grant Savitri any boon she chooses, and she asks for life in its fullness. After he has granted this boon, Savitri explains how it is impossible for that life to be without Satyavan. Death is so moved by Savitri's plea that he is left with no choice but to bring Satyavan back to life. As a prelude to this story there will be a dramatic staging of Holst's Hymns from the Rig Veda that will literally and figuratively prepare the stage for the opera, providing an evening of immersion in both Host's exquisite sound world and these ancient texts.

Auditions will be held on SATURDAY 8TH MARCH (9AM-12PM) and SUNDAY 9TH MARCH (9AM-6PM) in the BATEMAN AUDITORIUM, Gonville and Caius College.

To set up an audition please contact our producer Katie Schofield (ks475@cam.ac.uk) in advance to arrange a time (auditions will last no more than 15 minutes), indicating whether you will require an accompanist and, if possible, what repertoire you will perform. Singers are asked to audition with one or two piecec of their choosing whose dramatic content applies to the relevant role for which they are singing. Of course, material from the opera itself is welcome at the auditions too. Roles available are:

SAVITRI (soprano) - Savitri is the only character who is onstage for the whole opera and spends a great deal of time alone in that space. She shows extraordinary devotion and commitment to her husband, and displays a quiet heroism and stoic intensity throughout, tempered by occasional moments of passionate exclamation and desire, as well as moments of great pathos and tenderness. Singers interested in auditioning for this role should sing a piece that demonstrates a range of emotions, or preferably charts a specific, simple emotional journey that can be conveyed to the panel in performance (e.g. despair to hope, hate to love, sadness to joy, denial to acceptance). Pieces from any period or language are welcome, though singers are encouraged to audition with a piece of Lieder or C20th English song.

SATYAVAN (tenor) - Satyavan is primarily a heroic tenor and requires a singer who can demonstrate a boyish confidence, enthusiasm, and general love of life. During the course of the opera, Satyavan dies and is brought back to life, and a singer should be aware that the panel will also be looking for a singer who can also demonstrate a certain level of self-doubt, confusion, and vulnerability in their performance. Singers are welcome to apply with a piece from any period or language. Music that is somewhat folk-like is particularly suitable.

DEATH (baritone/bass) - Despite what the role's name may suggest, the part of Death does not require a singer with a particularly large, or indeed, low-lying vocal range. More important is that a singer demonstrates strong diction and articulation in their performance, as Death sings many of his earlier lines from offstage. Death is a more 'human' character than might be first expected, and singers are encouraged to choose a piece that need not only demonstrate power and strength, but also self-doubt, vulnerability, and emotional dependency and commitment. Pieces from any period are welcome, though English-language songs and arias are preferable.

CHORUS OF FEMALE VOICES - The chorus will have a large role to play in the opera. In addition to the Choral Hymns that will be performed at the start of the show (these will be staged, and may even include some dance), the chorus has an extensive part during the opera itself as an essential element of the musical texture. Singers who are interested in auditioning just for the chorus are invited to sing a piece of any type from any period that best demonstrates their vocal ability and potential. Female singers who apply for the part of Savitri may also be considered for the chorus.

Please feel free to contact the core production team with any questions you may have about audition procedure or repertoire.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Carlos del Cueto (conductor, cdelcueto@mac.com)
James Hurley (director, jah96@cam.ac.uk)

INTERESTING MUSICAL PEOPLE NEEDED!

Do you like children? Can you vaguely sing? Happy to be dressed up? Good on
the spot?

Cambridge University Opera Society Hansel and Gretel 2007 needs helpers for Primary and Secondary workshops! Even if you can just do one school, one hour of your time would be greatly appreciated! KS1 involves helping a group of children to create their own mini 'song-story' based on a stimulus picture, KS2 involves them creating a mini 'opera' with us - you must become the character and make it up!

It's great fun and so beneficial for the schools involved, even the most
reluctant helpers last year ended up throwing themselves into it all!

Please email Anna Williams on asw25 if you're interested and she'll let you
know the dates and information. (Please state if you helped last year or
not)

Many many thanks!
Jacqui Howard
CUOS Education Director
