Calling all musicians and ensembles -- We're building up a list of volunteers for a new exciting project at CaMEO.

*** Email me -- performers@mus.cam.ac.uk ***

We need engaging musicians/vocalists/ensembles of any ilk to perform short demonstrations of their instruments/music in local primary schools. Kids don't often get the chance to hear live music so we're organising these projects to get out there and really fire their enthusiasm for learning about music and picking up an instrument.

The performances will be very short -- only around 30 minutes, and constitute perhaps a couple of brief pieces and a basic explanation of how you got interested in music and what you enjoy about playing.

It's short, it's easy, it's flexible, it's enjoyable and it's a great way to get involved in the amazing work that CaMEO does --- transport will be FREE and you can organise with the schools directly for a time in your busy schedule that suits YOU.

*** If you're interested please drop me a message - performers@mus.cam.ac.uk ***

Violin and viola wanted for Piano Quartets March 9th 2012 - Friday at 7.30pm. Transport provided but only small fee (£15 each). Cellist was once Instrumental Award holder, pianist was at R.A.M. so seeking similar standard players if available. Rehearse Churchill College -again, transport provided, to and from. Originally, programme was to include Mozart G minor and Dvorak Op.23 but it can be any combo solos/duos/trios/4tets to fill the time - whatever repertoire comes easiest since time is short. The venue is Impington College (Music Society) ten minutes outside Cambridge but transport provided.
Please phone 07802 720664.

Please reply to Kim Field at kim@haleleka.com (my Cambridge CRS ID will expire soon!)

AFTERNOON/EVENING JOB WITH MUSICAL FAMILY IN CAMBRIDGE

We are a family living in Cambridge (near the University Library). We have a daughter who plays violin and piano and a daughter who plays cello and piano. Both girls go to primary school at King's College School on West Road.

We are looking for someone who would like a job...

TUESDAYS 4 pm - 8:30 pm

WEDNESDAYS 4 pm - 6 pm

Your job will be to help the children practice their instruments. You will also have to collect one of the girls from school and walk home to our house.

The stipend is £80 per week and we need you to reliably be available during the primary school terms (which are a little bit longer, but generally follow the University term). We are looking for a musician, but not necessarily a piano or string player.

Please contact Kim Field at kim@haleleka.com if you are interested and tell us a bit about yourself and why you feel you'd enjoy and be good at this job.

The Shape of Song: A Conference on Lyric Poetry

7 July 2012
Faculty of English
University of Cambridge
Cambridge, UK

Opening Plenary: John Wilkinson (University of Chicago, USA)
Closing Plenary: Jonathan Culler (Cornell University, USA)

There is little consensus as to what the lyric poem is or does. It has become shorthand for non-long poems, for short poems concerned with voice and feeling, for poems that address a readership, for poems which are musical, for poems based on ballads, hymns, jingles, tunes, song, and hip hop, for poems in which a tacit or explicit ‘I’ speaks to no one in particular. These problems of definition are inseparable from more general issues concerning the verbal work of art: what are its extra-linguistic, illocutionary and perlocutionary features, and how is it made? Furthermore, what is the relationship between lyric and metricality? between lyric and subjectivity? Is lyric a mode of thinking? How does lyric address authority and the discourses which underwrite power? What is the relation between lyric and capital?

The study of lyric remains in a significant position at the disciplinary junction of historical poetics, versification studies, musicology, linguistics, aesthetics, and social theory. We envision this conference to be a multi-disciplinary forum through which scholars from various disciplines—English and Comparative Literature, Classics, Musicology, Linguistics, Philosophy among them—address the theoretical, historical, and social dimensions of lyric. We invite papers that conceptualize ‘lyric’, as well as papers which take a specific text or historical focus. We welcome interdisciplinary approaches which consider lyric’s relationship to music, visual art, drama, dance, and performance.

Papers should be 20 minutes in duration.
Poetry readings will follow the conference proceedings.

Please send paper proposals of no more than 250 words to Ryan Dobran at shapeofsong [at] gmail [dot] com before 15 February 2012.

The Lent week 2 ADC mainshow is Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children (directed by the fabulous Nikki Moss). This very exciting project needs a charismatic band.

The band will be on stage, as much a part of the action as the cast (expect some very exciting costumes). The music is based on on Duke Special's score here
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Special-Presents-Mother-Courage-Children/dp/B0037B81WS/ref=pd_sim_dmusic_a_3
That's the style we're aiming for.

The exact composition of the band has not been decided, so if you're interested do email in. We particularly want an accordion, a violin, percussion, a trumpet (or other brass), and a cello. We already have our vocalist, but an added ability to sing would come in handy.

Rehearsals will be daytime 6th-17th January (and a few thereafter up to the show), and the show is 7.45pm, Tue 31st Jan - Sat 4th Feb.

If you're at all interested, do email Alistair (ajc284) for a chat about it. Thanks.

THE PRITCHARD KENNEDY CHORAL COMPOSITION AWARD

2011-12 Competition

The Pritchard Kennedy Choral Composition Award was established by Mr Matt Pritchard (1996) and Mr John Kennedy (1996) in November 2006. The purpose of the Award is to encourage University students to develop their creative skills through musical composition and thereby to build a body of music written specially for Sidney Sussex College and its choir. Compositions should be appropriate for performance by the choir in a chapel service, whether evensong, a particular festival, a carol service or a unique occasion. The competition is open to anyone that is registered as a student of the University of Cambridge. The Award will be made annually by an Awards Committee comprising the benefactors, the Director of Music and a composer of national or international status. The value of the Award will be £250, reviewed annually, and may be split.

Submissions are now being accepted for the 2011-12 competition.

Candidates should submit a setting of the following Latin text (translation provided), written especially for the competition by poet Charles Anthony Silvestri, for unaccompanied voices.

In parietes, lapides,
In stabula caelata,
Perfundebamus lacrimas
Et gaudia oblata.

Into these walls, these stones,
These carved choirstalls,
We have poured out our tears
And our joys as offerings.

Munera nostra gratiae
Diu a"regabantur;
Thesauri ipsi idola
Ne quando venerentur.

Our gifts of thanks
Have long piled up;
May these treasures themselves
Never become idols.

Auratas turres spolia,
Evelle pavimentum –
Permanet numen domini,
Utrumne est ornatum.

Tear down the gilded spires,
Rip up the fancy floor –
The spirit of God remains,
Decorated or not.

Candidates should submit FOUR copies of their compositions to Dr David Skinner, Osborn
Director of Music, Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge CB2 3HU for consideration by the selection committee, which includes Sidney’s Composer in Residence ERIC WHITACRE.

The closing date is FRIDAY, 16 MARCH 2012.

The winner(s) will be announced in Lent Term 2011, and the successful composition(s) will be performed by the Chapel Choir later in the same term.

SOUND DESIGNER needed for a production of the play "Frozen" by Bryony Lavery.

Our production needs a soundtrack to bring it to life. There is a complex
sound plot already specified by the author, and we need a creative
individual to take this further, and capture the spirit of this
remarkable play with music and sound.

"I'm as near to not being alive any more as I've ever been."
Frozen dares to ask whether it's possible to understand the minds of

Frozen has previously been performed at the National and on Broadway. It

The biggest and most exciting production of the year! This is a unique opportunity to be involved with a fantastically thrilling show to be held at West Road Concert Hall, and is the highlight of the Cambridge University Opera Society's performance year.

We are also advertising for an Assistant Musical Director and Principal Répétiteur, and have opened up applications to be part of the production team - see below. Please email Natasha Brice on ntb24 for more information or to apply.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Die Fledermaus Production Team

Cambridge University Opera Society present
DIE FLEDERMAUS
by Johann Strauss II

CUOS Mainshow February 23-25th 2012 – West Road Concert Hall

Prince Orlofsky is throwing a party, and Falke has orchestrated some real-life drama for the
Prince’s entertainment. All in revenge for the time his best friend Eisenstein left him in the
middle of town, passed out and dressed as a bat...

Everyone who’s anyone is going to be there. They just don’t want each other to know.
Eisenstein should be in prison so he’s keeping a low profile, especially as police-chief Frank
is also there in disguise. Eistenstein’s wife, having left her former lover locked up in her
husband’s prison cell, is also keen to conceal her identity. Their maid Adele should be
tending to her sick aunt, not partying with her sister. With the help of a bit of waltzing and
copious amounts of champagne, everyone’s identities will be exposed, and their
philandering revealed.

Cambridge University Opera Society’s production places this much-loved farce in the
privileged world of twenty-first century young socialites. Bubbling with infectious energy
and fizzing with melodious charm, Strauss’s Die Fledermaus will leave you as giggly as those
onstage (champagne optional).

AUDITIONS (including one NON-SINGING role)
Thursday 27th October

Friday 28th October

Saturday 29th October

http://www.doodle.com/scn7pa4w263kz3wa

Please sign up on the doodle provided, providing your name, email address and choice of aria in the comment box of your selected time (and please specify if you are auditioning for the non-singing role Frosch). We will email to confirm the time and location of your audition shortly.

-----------------------------------------------------------

We will be auditioning for all roles. There are a number of small parts as well as the standard lead roles, a large chorus and one sizeable non-singing role (male). There is a real opportunity for singers and actors alike in Fledermaus, so whether you have a little experience or tons of it, do come along and audition.

Please bring an aria from the operatic repertoire you think best shows off your voice, bearing Die Fledermaus in mind. Auditions will last approximately 15 minutes and will include a little bit of direction as well as a sing-through of your chosen aria. Don’t be offended, therefore, if we don’t get to hear your entire aria!

If you wish to audition only for the non-singing role, the jailor Frosch, please prepare a comic monologue.

Please email our producer, Natasha (ntb24@cam.ac.uk), if you have any questions.

-------------------------------------------------------------

ASSISTANT MUSICAL DIRECTOR/PRINCIPLE RÉPÉTITEUR

Ideally we are looking for someone who can fill the role of both Assistant Musical Director and Principal Répétiteur, however the positions may well be filled by two different people.

In an AMD we are looking for someone with experience in singing or vocal direction. The job of the AMD would be to assist the Musical Director in rehearsals and in leading extra principal and chorus rehearsals. The time commitment of an AMD would not necessarily be great, but would be a fantastic experience for someone looking for an avenue into conducting.

We are looking for a highly competent pianist (and good sight reader) for the core role of Principal Répétiteur. This is a crucially important position within the production and would involve participation at most rehearsals accompanying both principals and chorus.

To apply, please email Alex Beetschen on ab836@cam.ac.uk by 11pm on Tuesday 25th October.

Hi,

I am hosting a champagne reception in the Fitzwilliam Museum on Tuesday 12th July 6.30pm to 8.00pm for distinguished guests including the Lord
Lieutenant and the Mayor.

I am looking for a pianist who can provide some classical and light classical background music for about an hour during this time. I'm afraid
it's not a recital, but we are looking for a high standard of musicianship.

Please reply to ach3@cam.ac.uk

Kind regards

Andy
