Cambridge Beethoven Ensemble

Suor Angelica
9pm, 20th, 21st and 23rd November
Trinity College Chapel

Director: James Hurley
Conductor: Daniel Hill
Producer: Isabella Gage

This is one of Puccini's most beautiful and intimate operas. Written as the middle act of his Il Trittico, Suor Angelica was Puccini's personal favourite of the three. Set in a convent in the latter part of the 17th Century, it tells the story of Sister Angelica who was sent from her family in disgrace some years earlier. The opera begins with the day-to-day life of the nuns, interrupted by the arrival of The Princess, Sister Angelica's Aunt. The Princess has come to inform Sister Angelica that her sister is to be married and that she must renounce her claim to the family inheritance. Sister Anglica asks after her son, only to be told he is dead. Overcome with grief, Sister Angelica kills herself; the opera ends with a vision of her son appearing before her surrounded by light. The cast of 14 sopranos and altos is made up from the very best young singers from the Cambridge Chapel Choirs and London Conservatories, and the production team is highly experienced.

Auditions: 16th and 17th October, 8-10.30pm, West Road Music Faculty

This is an all female cast, so we are looking for sopranos and altos.

Please prepare a short piece or extract written after 1800. For more information or to book a ten minute slot for your audition, please send a short CV detailing your musical experience to Isabella Gage (iag25@cam.ac.uk).

If you enjoy singing and would like to join a Choir, Magdalene Choir is looking for 2 TENORS and 1 BASS. If you are interested, please email Benedict James Wilson on bjw42@cam.ac.uk to request a brief audition.

The usual weekly slots for Choir are :
Wednesday rehearsal 6 - 7.10 pm
Thursday rehearsal 5 - 6.25, evensong 6.45, FREE Formal Hall 7.30 pm
Sunday rehearsal 4.30 – 6.05, evensong 6.30, FREE Formal Hall 7.30 pm

There is a black-tie end-of-term dinner for the Choir and a summer lunch followed by punting. The Choir is called upon to sing at College feasts and is fed and watered into the bargain.

In addition to the weekly services and rehearsals, we usually visit a cathedral to sing Evensong once each term and in the summer we go on tour for about a week. In past years we have toured in Malta, Sweden, Germany, Holland and Belgium. It is good fun – ask the Choir!

This term members of the Choir will be a part of a larger choir in Gt St Mary's at a memorial service for Prof Henry Chadwick, an Honorary Fellow of Magdalene. We will also provide the Choir for the University Sermon, given by our Master. In January, Magdalene Choir is to be one of a small number of college choirs that have been asked to augment CUMS chorus in a performance of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, to be conducted by Christopher Robinson.

I very much hope that you will consider joining Magdalene Choir.

Visually, the opera will be equally ambitious - fully staged, and making
comprehensive use of the ADC Theatre's potential for set, costume, lighting
succession to Katherine Hambridge.

The commitment is one Sunday service (10 am) plus a mid-week choir practice (currently 6.30 - 7.30 pm on Tuesdays) plus very occasional extra services (Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Ascension Day mid week evenings, Palm Sunday and Sunday before Christmas evenings and Good Friday lunchtime).

The position has been held for the past two years by former organ scholars remaining in Cambridge after graduation.

SINFONIA TAMESA

For all soon-to-be-graduate instrumentalists – Sinfonia Tamesa is waiting
for you! We are London’s only amateur/semi-pro orchestra consisting mainly
of recent graduates, with large numbers of ex-CUSO/CUMS/CUCO Cambridge
musicians in our ranks. We aim not only for fantastic performances but
have also established ourselves as the most sociable, lively and friendly
of London orchestras, with regular socials, mad after-parties and a rather
concerning ability to get recognised in any pub or bar in the Waterloo
area.

Our reputation for quality in performance has recently received the BBC’s
stamp of approval, when we were selected as one of only 3 London
orchestras to participate in the upcoming BBC2 series Maestro under the
baton of celebrity conductors such as Goldie and Alex James, to name but a
few. Our programmes incorporate all the big symphonic standards, as well
as choral collaborations, projects with new young composers, and concertos
in collaboration with the emerging stars from the London music colleges.
We hope to build on our ‘youthful’ image in coming years through
community work with schools and through charity concerts, as well as further
projects along the lines of Maestro.

Any instrumentalists who, like me, found themselves drifting inexorably
London-wards, aching from the sudden lack of daily fixing requests in the
barren wasteland of their new corporate lives; WE NEED YOU! Please get in
touch now via email: u.sagar.03@cantab.net, and get yourselves on our list
in advance of our autumn concert, which will begin rehearsing in October.
I hope very much to see many of you there!

Happy graduation and have a great summer,

Ursula

Cambridge University Baroque Ensemble is pleased to announce auditions
for a major staged operatic production next academic year:

'ORFEO' by CLAUDIO MONTEVERDI at the ADC THEATRE,
Week 2, Lent Term 2009 (27th-31st January)

*The Production*

This ambitious production will feature a large Renaissance orchestra and offer cast members the opportunity to work alongside a professional team of leading Cambridge early music specialists. Performed in English, 'Orfeo' will feature a new, especially-prepared singing translation of this timeless story.

Visually, the opera will be equally ambitious - fully staged, and making
comprehensive use of the ADC Theatre's potential for set, costume, lighting
and technical wizardry - a true showpiece of the 2008-09 season.

The roles of the opera are as follows:

Orfeo - Tenor,
Lent terms, with a short intensive rehearsal period before term starts in

MUSIC TO BRIGHTEN UP PEOPLE'S LIVES

Every Wednesday evening, a hardy group of volunteers who don't take
themselves too seriously, visit a different residential home in the
Cambridge area and entertain with songs, music, poetry, magic and whatever
else anyone can do! The group is looking quite third year and grad heavy at
tradition going in years to come.

The theme for this year's National Archaeology Week (12 to 18 July) is archaeology and music and I am designing a very small exhibition "Whistle a happy tune" showing some of the ocarinas, whistles etc from around the world which are not normally on display. I am also putting together a programme of short lunchtime talks: Archaeology and the Origins of Music; Polynesian Instruments; ...
It would be good to have a combination of live performances and background music. I also wondered about having some music for which children could pick up a tambourine, triangle, maraccas, drum and accompany the musician. Can anyone help us? We have no way of paying you, but can provide limited travel expenses and lunch.
