Auditions for the Cambridge Greek Play 2010

Every three years The Cambridge Greek Play takes place at the
Cambridge Arts Theatre; in Autumn 2010 this will be Aeschylus'
Agamemnon.

The production is led by a professional director, designer and
composer and is an exciting opportunity for Cambridge actors to work
with a professional team on an ambitious production.

The production is in Ancient Greek, but it isn't essential to be a
Classicist or read Greek; there is plenty of tutoring, training and
help on hand to help you conquer it!

We are looking for committed, talented actors with a desire to learn
new skills, tackle chorus and movement work and explore a weighty
poetic text. We are looking for strong singers in some roles, though
not all, and we are keen to have some actor/musicians in the ensemble	.

There will be an initial exploration period at the end of this term in
9th/10th week; some initial rehearsals to kick the start the project.

The main rehearsal period will take place from 1st September, prior to
the show being at the Arts Theatre in the 1st or 2nd week of
Michaelmas Term. It is essential that you are available to be in
Cambridge from 1st September to rehearse full time for this month.

So if you would like to come and audition:

First round auditions will be on Tuesday 2nd March from 3pm-7pm.
Please prepare a short verse monologue (Shakespeare for example) to
perform from memory. If you are a confident singer, please also bring
something to sing. Don't worry if you are not. To book yourself an
audition time please email Blake Palmer: Palmer311@live.missouristate.edu

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW INVITED FOR THE POSITION OF CHURCHILL JAZZ BAND DIRECTOR FOR 2010 - 2011.

Next year's director will inherit one of the most exciting and promising big bands in Cambridge. Set up less than two years ago, the band has gone from strength to strength and now has an established presence on the jazz scene in Cambridge. A boundless enthusiasm for promoting the band, fresh innovatory ideas and a desire to continue striving for greater musical excellence are essential requirements for the role.

If you wish to nominate an unusual configuration of candidates, e.g. two co-directors, or a two-role leadership consisting of both an MD and President, this may be possible but only after approval by the committee. Please email pn252 if you wish to discuss this further. The director does not need to be a current member of the band.

***Nominations must be submitted to pn252 by 28/02/2010. All nominations will remain confidential.***

The election will be held at an EGM called for this purpose on 07/03/2010 (9.00pm - 10.30pm) and may include hustings. Once elected the director's term will begin at the end of May Week 2010. Easter term will act as a hand-over period where the old director will be able to share responsibilities with their elected successor.

I hope to hear from you soon.

I'm currently doing a study on individual differences in music as part of my undergraduate degree and I need undergraduate students to participate. The online survey involves listening to music clips as well as some questions related to your personality and musical background. It is fun to do and takes only 15 min to complete! Please participate and let me know about your music preferences and perceptions. Your opinion matters!

Individual responses to the survey will of course be kept strictly confidential, and all responses are anonymised to ensure individuals cannot be identified through the results. This study has received ethical approval.

‘Gypsy’ – Magdalene Musical Productions Society, Lent term week 7, 3rd-6th March, Magdalene College Cripps Auditorium.

One of the greatest Broadway shows of all time, ‘Gypsy’ follows the story of Mme Rose, the epitome of a pushy stage mother, and her two daughters. Rose is determined to make her children stars at any cost, constantly dreaming up new acts for her ‘babies’ while failing to recognise that they are growing into young women. After several failed attempts to make the act a success in Vaudeville, Roses’ dreams coming crashing down around her as one daughter elopes, the other becomes a burlesque star and the man she loves leaves her. Jule Styne’s fantastic musical score includes poignant ballads, up-tempo Vaudeville songs and sleazy burlesque ‘stripping music’, as well as a duet with a pantomime cow!

We are looking for a pit band of around 15 players, including most common band instruments. We are currently most in need of STRINGS and TRUMPETS/TROMBONES.
If you are interested in playing in the band, please E-mail the MD, Chris Nash, at cn320 as soon as possible, giving details of the instrument(s) played, approximate standard and any previous band/orchestral experience.

Wednesday 27th January 2010, 7:30pm

The Cambridge Union Society is proud to be hosting a commemoration of the national Holocaust Memorial Day, held annually on the anniversary of the liberation of Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. The event is open to non-members, for a suggested donation of £2. All proceeds will go to the AEGIS Trust.

We will be having two remarkable speakers address us. The first is British POW survivor Denis Avey, who has recently come to prominence in the national media as 'the man who smuggled himself into Auschwitz.' Mr Avey twice risked his life to find out the truth about the death camp, and helped a Jewish man survive. This is the first time that Mr Avey has told his story to a live audience.

Our second speaker is Dr. James Smith, co-founder of the UK Holocaust
Memorial and Educational Centre, internationally recognised as a pioneering example of genocide awareness. He is also co-founder and Chief Executive of the AEGIS Trust, which works closely with the government and other international bodies to campaign for the prevention of genocide. It has been instrumental in the setting up of a commemorative centre in Kigali to remember the Rwandan genocide.

The evening will be compered by Lord Greville Janner, Chairman of the Holocaust Educational Trust and a key international figure in efforts to seek compensation and restitution for Holocaust victims. He was instrumental in arranging the 1997 London Nazi Looted Gold conference.

Please join us for this interesting and important commemorative event.

Composers and songwriters generate significant cultural and economic wealth, so understanding their lifelong educational and training needs is crucial. For this reason a major survey of composers has been launched by the Royal College of Music’s Centre for Music and Multimedia. The survey seeks to investigate the appropriateness and effectiveness of training and education opportunities for music composers, both in prospect and retrospect. It will capture the experiences of a large number and wide range of composers and songwriters across Europe and beyond, in order to lobby for better opportunities and resources to study the art and craft of composing, including lifelong learning.

The survey has been developed by Professor David Burnand, Head of the CMM at the Royal College of Music, London; with support and advice from colleagues in the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, the Contemporary Music Centre Ireland, the National University of Ireland at Maynooth, Leiden University Academy of Creative and Performing Arts, and the University of Hertfordshire.

Following the very sad announcement of William Norris's departure, we now have a conducting position to fill. Producing a high quality of music in a fun and friendly atmosphere, the non-audition band has been delighting with its music for almost fifteen years. The position would require leading half of our Monday night rehearsals every week, with each half lasting just over an hour. If you're interested in conducting us, please send an email with relevant experience and enthusiasm to hlg30@cam.ac.uk by Wednesday 20th January.
tkw23 on "Opportunity For Music Students To Perform At The National Gallery"

For the second year of the National Gallery's programme for music students (undergraduate and postgraduate) we wanted to examine the nature of performance and what makes a great soloist. The project is entitled "Performing through Art" and its purpose is to inspire all budding soloists throughout the UK and help them find their voice.

Last year, students from Cambridge University took part in the National Gallery project "Composing through Art" and I do hope that they will also be able to take part in this year's project "Performing through Art" as well.

Becoming a great soloist is more than being an accomplished musician: it is about learning to communicate with an audience and being inspiring to listen to. Our study day for "Performing through Art" on 25 November 2009 will explore the issue of performance in depth and it will culminate in a public concert of UK student soloists at the National Gallery in June 2010.

In order to take part, students will need to attend the study day on 25 November 2009 when three world renowned musicians: the pianist Joanna MacGregor, the composer and cellist Philip Sheppard and the Radio 3 New Generation Artist, singer Elizabeth Watts will speak about their performance styles and their sources of inspiration. They will also discuss how they would use the National Gallery collection as a source and how the students might link it to a wide range of music.

The study day will further examine the affinities between art and music and after a tour of the gallery with our lecturers, the students will be shown one painting in depth. Over the next three months they will be invited to submit their own demo recordings of music which they have personally linked (in as eclectic a way as possible) to this chosen painting. From these recordings, students will then be selected to take part in a public concert in June 2010 in the National Gallery in front of the painting.

Similar to last year, students will need to book places on the study day in advance through our website at http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/student-study-day-25-november

If you have any further questions about this wonderful opportunity then do contact me gayna.pelham@ng-london.org.uk or my colleague Lee Riley lee.riley@ng-london.org.uk

We would also welcome any music faculty staff who were able to come with their students on 25 November 2009 and of course they would not be charged to attend.

Dear fellow music students,

If you like new music, performing, composing, discussing issues surrounding
composition and the contemporary composer, or just to listen to all of that
going on around you, then this year's Conference Weekend at the York Spring
Festival of New Music 2010 is definitely for you! This two-day event will
feature showcases of student compositions, composition workshops, seminars
about new music and collaborations with other fine arts, concerts and more.

Taking place at the University of York on 15th and 16th May 2010, this
annual festival is being run for the second time by students, for students.
Last year's Collaboration Day saw four ensembles from universities across
the UK come together to perform each other's pieces and experience each
other's different attitudes and outlooks on new music composition and style.

This year we have expanded into a two-day event to incorporate more time for
discussion and research about and around composition, new music, and also
exploring cross art form practice and how the music relates to other fine
arts. Moreover, the weekend's events are all entirely free of charge!

The Conference Day on Saturday 15th May will feature talks by composers and
writers who have worked together; round-table discussions of new music for
all involved to debate and discuss issues surrounding contemporary
composition; workshops, and an evening concert given by the Black Hair
Ensemble will round off the day.

Sunday 16th May is the Collaboration Day: an opportunity for you to have
your piece performed by an ensemble from another university, and to meet
other new music enthusiasts. Continuing the theme of 'Words and Music', a
composition workshop run by the newly formed Chiasmus Ensemble from
Manchester, offers the chance to write a short piece to a predetermined
narrative written by creative practitioner in writing and storytelling, Gina
Perry. Composers and performers will also have rehearsal time to collaborate
and work together towards the final performance in one of two showcases
during the day of your compositions, pieces which you have submitted for
ensembles at other universities to perform.

If you would like to be involved in the Weekend, or would like more
information, please email James at conference@yorkspringfestival.co.uk .
Alternatively, feel free to call me on my mobile number below if you need
more information. The deadline for an ensemble, department, performer or
composer to register as participating in the day, for logistical and
planning reasons, is Friday 4th December, and an initial deadline for
compositions to be submitted to the respective performers is Monday 12th
January. If you are part of, or know of a new music ensemble in your
department, ask them about it and please do get in touch! The more people
here to share the experience and participate in the spirit of collaboration,
the better it will be!

IT WILL BE FUN
