Friday 10th July, 8.00pm, West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge. Tickets £20.

Three of Britains most talented performers from the worlds of music and poetry are set to perform an exclusive recital in Cambridge which promises to be a magical celebration of
Charles Darwins ideas and evolutionary theories.

The event will bring together Susan Gritton, one of Britains leading lyric sopranos; pianist and Sony-Award-winning BBC Radio 3 presenter Iain Burnside; and Darwins great, great granddaughter the prize-winning poet Ruth Padel.
Life Laughs Onward, Darwin in Poetry and Music, will take the audience on a voyage down a river of music and ideas to discover how Darwins work inspired composers and poets, reflecting his view that Love is the commonest theme of our song. The programme includes settings of Milton, Tennyson, Gilbert and Hardy, music from Handel, Schubert, Wagner, Parry and Britten, plus works from Darwins extended family Ralph Vaughan Williams and Padel, who will read from her latest book Darwin: A Life in Poems.
Susan Gritton appears regularly in opera, recitals and concert with many of the worlds great orchestras and conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle with the Berlin Philharmonic and Sir
Charles Mackerras at the Royal Opera House. After studying botany at Oxford and in London, she won the acclaimed Kathleen Ferrier Memorial Prize in 1994.
Iain Burnside interweaves his roles as pianist and radio presenter with equal aplomb. He is also a master programmer with an instinct for the telling juxtaposition. His recordings span
Schoenberg and Copland to Debussy and Judith Weir and especially English Song, as proved in his recent acclaimed recordings of Britten, Finzi and Vaughan Williams.
Ruth Padel has published seven collections of poetry, many shortlisted for the T S Eliot Prize.
Her non-fiction includes books on modern poetry and a study of mythical Greek influences on rock music. She is poet-in-Residence at Christs College, Cambridge and is a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Literature and the Zoological Society of London.
This event is part of the Cambridge Darwin 2009 Festival, 5-10 July. For information and bookings, www.darwin2009festival.com / 01223 765440.
