Haydn’s Op. 33 quartet precedes Martinu’s seventh and last quartet. Full of vitality and neo-classical rhymic verve, it carries the listener along on its waves of energy. Beethoven Op. 131 is simply one of the most miraculous pieces ever composed: as original as it is profound it shows the composer at his height – and he was condemned to deafness well before he wrote it.
This concert is sponsored by MILLS & REEVE.
‘The Endellion is arguably the finest quartet in Britain’ – The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians
‘Intonation, balance, rhythmic precision, subtleties of dynamics and colour: all were unimpeachable …. Special glory lay in the Endellions’ light conversational tone. From the very first bar, every rhythmic nicety took on a lilt and sparkle. Graceful sighs, filigree dancing and jumping-jack rhythms dominated the middle movements. In the finale, melancholy weighed in on cue, but nothing could shake the music’s smile. A lovely performance’ – The Times
‘The Endellion Quartet’s fastidious and elegant playing … every movement delivered with energy, musical insight and a good deal of wry humour’ – BBC Music Magazine
