One of Haydn’s masterly Op. 33 set of quartets (sometimes called the ‘Russian’) opens each concert this season. Shostakovich’s very expressive eighth quartet – dedicated to the victims of war and fascism – combines ferocity, compassion and despair. Beethoven’s ‘Razumovsky’ completes the Russian flavour. Setting new standards of breadth and depth it also includes a Russian folksong as a nod to its Russian dedicatee.
‘The Endellion is arguably the finest quartet in Britain’ – The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians
‘The Endellion Quartet’s fastidious and elegant playing … every movement delivered with energy, musical insight and a good deal of wry humour’ – BBC Music Magazine
